Christmas in August, a Benefit Concert and More Things To Do This Weekend

Thursday, Aug. 22:
Although the weather says otherwise, it’s Christmas in August over at the NOCCA Institute, which hosts the Let it Snow holiday party and market. The event, held at the Razzle Dazzle design workshop, features holiday decorations and gifts, refreshments, performances by NOCCA students and an auction for a decorated Christmas tree. Ten percent of sales benefit NOCCA. Info here.

Susan Cowsill’s band takes on Tears for Fears’ Songs from the Big Chair for the Covered in Vinyl covers series at One Eyed Jacks. Info here.

Southern heavy metal icon Phil Anselmo, known for his work with the bands Pantera and Down, presents his new solo project Philip H. Anselmo and The Illegals. Warbeast and Author & Punisher open at Tipitina’s. Info here.


Friday, Aug. 23:
Friday is a good night to catch a slew of New Orleans’ best contemporary rock acts. The noise-pop duo Caddywhompus returns from an international tour to play at One Eyed Jacks with Boyfrndz and All People. Info here.

Irvin Mayfield’s Love Sessions benefit concert series kicks off at Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse. The summertime concert series, which features plenty of special guests, donates 100 percent of ticket sales to local nonprofits. Info here.


Sunday, Aug. 25:
It's time for the final installment of Strut + Swim, the event where the W Hotel opens its pool to the public. Local designers and makeup artists showcase their latest in a poolside fashion show at the event which also includes a DJ and drink specials. Info here.

Lauren LaBorde earned a degree in Mass Communication from Loyola University New Orleans. After graduating, she interned at Washingtonian magazine and was a terrible restaurant hostess before joining Gambit, where she was the calendar listings editor and resident reality TV correspondent for more than three years.
